The Haryana Police arrested a traffic constable for allegedly sexually harassing a national-level woman karate player in a shared autorickshaw in Rohtak, PTI reported on Saturday. The constable, identified as Yaseen, has been suspended from duty.
In a complaint on Friday, the 21-year-old alleged that the accused harassed her and started touching her when they were in the autorickshaw. She said she hit him in self-defence and asked the driver to take the autorickshaw to the nearest women’s police station. The woman alleged that a senior woman police official at the station told her that the constable would only be scolded.
“To my surprise the woman station house officer asked me to not escalate the matter and offered to humiliate the constable for sexually harassing me in uniform,” the complainant told The Times of India.
The police lodged a First Information Report after the matter was brought to the attention of Rohtak Superintendent of Police Pankaj Nain. The female police official was transferred to Police Lines.
“A case under relevant provisions has been registered against the constable, Yaseen, for harassing the woman in the auto-rickshaw,” Rohtak Deputy Superintendent of Police Ramesh Kumar told PTI.
