“It’s time for India to become a nuclear state,” John Abraham’s character declares in the teaser for Parmanu: The Story of Pokhran. Based on the nuclear tests conducted in Pokhran in 1998, the film stars Abraham, Diana Penty and Boman Irani.
With plenty of men clad in military uniform and fancy gadgetry, the teaser proclaims that the nuclear tests at Pokhran, which were conducted as a secret operation, shook the world. The teaser has been released amid a public spat between producers John Abraham Entertainment and KriArj Entertainment and ambiguity over the status of their contract.
India had officially declared itself as a nuclear-powered state after the 1998 Pokhran tests. The first set of tests were conducted in 1974 under the code name Smiling Buddha.
Parmanu was initially scheduled to open in December 2017, but the release date was pushed several times owing to the conflict between the producers. It is now set to come out on May 4.
