Two soldiers of the Central Reserve Police Force died in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Wednesday after a vehicle of the paramilitary force ran over them when its driver lost control, the Jammu and Kashmir Police said. Three jawans were injured in the incident.
The police said the vehicle turned turtle after a mob pelted stones at it when CRPF troops were withdrawing from the Hiller area in Kokernag, PTI reported. The driver of the CRPF armoured vehicle, identified as Roop Singh, hit a motorcycle that the jawans, Riyaz Ahmed Wani and Nissar Ahmed Wani, were riding. They were taken to a hospital, but doctors declared them dead on arrival.
Earlier on Wednesday, the Jammu and Kashmir government had deployed security forces in Srinagar and other sensitive regions in the state to maintain law and order. The state has been tense since Sunday when 19 people – 12 militants, three Army personnel and four civilians – were killed in three separate gunfights in South Kashmir’s Shopian and Anantnag districts.
Educational institutes postponed exams scheduled for Wednesday. Train services remained suspended for the third consecutive day, and traffic on the Srinagar-Sonamarg Road was also suspended for the second straight day.
