The Centre on Tuesday set up a “high-powered committee” to examine the process by which exams of the Central Board of Secondary Education are conducted. The panel will also have the responsibility of suggesting measures to make the process “secure and foolproof through the use of technology”, School Education Secretary Anil Swarup said.

The committee will be chaired by VS Oberoi, former secretary of the Ministry of Human Resources. It has till May 31 to submit its report.

The development comes as CBSE is facing criticism for the lapses that led to the leaks of Class 10 and Class 12 board exam papers. While the board decided not to conduct a retest for the Class 10 mathematics paper, it will hold a re-exam for Class 12 economics on April 25.

The leak of the Class 10 mathematics paper had come to light after a 16-year-old student from West Delhi emailed CBSE Chairperson Anita Karwal about it.

The Delhi Police believe that the Class 12 economics paper was leaked through multiple sources. Investigators have arrested two teachers and the owner of a coaching centre in the city on Sunday for their alleged involvement in the leak. They were arrested a day after the Jharkhand Police apprehended 12 people, including students and private tutors, for their alleged links to the Class 10 mathematics question paper leak.

On Monday, the National Human Rights Commission had sent a notice to the Centre seeking details of the measures it has taken to counsel “aggrieved students” after the two question papers were leaked last week.
