A woman was hospitalised in Chennai on Monday after traffic policemen allegedly assaulted her, The Hindu reported. Her 21-year-old son, who was also seen in videos being beaten up by policemen, was sent to judicial custody on charges of assault.
The traffic police in T Nagar, Chennai, had stopped the man, M Prakash, as he was not wearing a helmet and had both his mother and sister riding pillion. An argument followed, during which policemen pulled him by his collar and he also grabbed the shirt of a policeman.
Closed-circuit television footage showed his mother pleading with the police to let her son go, but a reserve sub-inspector pushed her down and assaulted her. The man was angry at this, and moved towards the sub-inspector to grab his shirt.
His mother complained of chest pain after being assaulted with a walkie talkie, and was taken to a government hospital.
The police filed a case against Prakash under Sections 294B (uttering obscene words in a public place), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from his duty) and 427 (mischief causing damage) of the Indian Penal Code. He was sent to Puzhal central jail.
