The Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru was judged India’s best university in 2018, according to the National Institutional Ranking Framework India Rankings released by Union Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar in New Delhi on Tuesday. The Indian Institute of Science had topped the overall rankings as well as the university category in 2017 too.
The rankings were announced under nine categories: overall, universities, engineering, colleges, management, pharmacy, medical, architecture and law. According to the NIRF website, the institutes are ranked on parameters that broadly cover teaching, learning and resources; research and professional practices; graduation outcomes; outreach and inclusivity; and perception.
The NIRF was introduced in 2016 to rank Indian universities. The ministry uses a Data Capturing System to gather information on higher education institutes across the country.
The Jawaharlal Nehru University was ranked second, and the Banaras Hindu University took the third spot. Anna University in Chennai, the University of Hyderabad, Jadavpur University in Kolkata, the University of Delhi, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham in Tamil Nadu’s Coimbatore, the Savitribai Phule Pune University and the Aligarh Muslim University were the remaining top 10 varsities on the list.
Delhi’s Miranda House was judged the best college in India. The Capital’s St Stephen’s College, Bishop Heber College in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruchirappalli, Hindu College in Delhi, Presidency College and Loyola College in Chennai, Delhi’s Shri Ram College of Commerce and Lady Shri Ram College for Women, Ramakrishna Mission Vidyamandira in Howrah and Chennai’s Madras Christian College were among the top 10 colleges in 2018 in India.
The Indian Institute of Technology in Chennai, Mumbai and New Delhi were ranked the best engineering colleges while the Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru and Kolkata were the top management colleges in 2018.
Among medical institutions in India, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi bagged the top spot while the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research in Chandigarh and Vellore’s Christian Medical College were ranked second and third.
National Law School of India University in Bengaluru, the National Law University in New Delhi, and the Nalsar University of Law in Hyderabad were ranked the best institutes for legal studies.
Javadekar also announced on Tuesday that the Ministry of Human Resource Development has made it mandatory for all public institutions to participate in the ranking system from next year. “And, those public institutions which will not take part in it will face fund cut,” he said, according to PTI.
