The National Human Rights Commission on Monday issued notices to West Bengal chief secretary, home secretary and police chief over the violence that broke out in Asansol during Ram Navami last week. The panel gave them four weeks to submit a detailed report.
The human rights body also asked its director general (investigation) to form a team and conduct an inquiry into the situation at the disturbed areas. The team will submit a report in three weeks.
In a release, the NHRC said it had taken suo motu cognisance of news reports alleging police apathy and destruction of property by “unruly mobs”.
The Asansol-Raniganj area has been tense since clashes broke out on March 26 during Ram Navami celebrations. Prohibitory orders are in force in Asansol and internet services will remain suspended till April 4.
