Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal inaugurated the Andheri-Goregaon harbour line in Mumbai on Thursday. The new local train route was built at a cost of Rs 103 crore and will cater to 13,000 commuters every day, the Mumbai Mirror reported.

Western Railways’ Chief Public Relations Officer Ravinder Bhakar said Fadnavis and Goyal will also inaugurate 49 other passenger amenities. This includes lifts at Borivali and Dadar stations, escalators at Chhattrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Dockyard Road, Thane and Lonavala stations, an elevated booking office at Andheri, and foot-over bridges at Chunabhatti and Virar.

Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation, which implemented the Andheri-Goregaon harbour line project, wanted to begin services by June 2014, The Times of India reported. However, the date was extended to December 2017 and again to March. Reports were unclear about the reasons for the first inauguration delay, but the razing of structures that were obstructing the route in Goregaon was responsible for the second postponement.
