The University Grants Commission has asked higher educational institutes under its purview to consider offering a two-credit elective internship involving the central government’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. The internship will be a 15-day or 100-hour programme incorporating cleanliness activities and will be an option under the Choice Based Credit System.

The choice-based credit system is compulsorily followed by all central universities for its undergraduate programmes. “It is expected that the students will not only participate in the overall cleanliness in the villages or slums but would also help in setting up systems for sustaining cleanliness sanitation efforts under Swachh Bharat Abhiyan,” the commission’s statement said. “These efforts are expected to provide a great learning experience in Indian context to the students across the country and would help in improving the overall quality of education.”

The commission asked the universities and colleges to consider implementing the elective this summer.
