At least 10 people, including six children, were killed on Sunday after their auto rickshaw fell into a 20-foot open well in Telangana’s Nizamabad district.
The accident took place between the Mupkal and Mendora villages, The Hindu reported. Investigators said the auto rickshaw driver, who was speeding, seemed to have lost control, and fell into the open well nearby.
There were 20 people reportedly crammed in the vehicle, making the accident more severe. Seven of them, including the driver, were able to climb out of the well.
Local authorities pumped the water out of the well to trace the missing bodies. Villagers started helping people out of the well before the rescue personnel arrived, The New Indian Express reported. The operations went on till late on Sunday night.
Agriculture Minister Pocharam Srinivas Reddy said the district collector has been asked to ensure the victims get the help they need, according to The Hindu.
