The police in Kerala’s Malappuram district arrested a man for allegedly stabbing his daughter on Thursday, a day before her wedding, The Indian Express reported.
The 22-year-old woman named Athira died on her way to hospital. Her father, P Rajan, a 42-year-old truck driver, had reportedly objected to the marriage because the groom, a soldier, belonged to the Dalit community.
The marriage ceremony was scheduled to be held in a temple on Friday. The woman’s other family members, including her mother, had not objected to the marriage.
Rajan and his daughter had argued on Thursday over the matter, according to The Times of India. Athira went to a neighbour’s house but Rajan allegedly dragged her out and stabbed her repeatedly. Police said he was in an inebriated condition at the time.
