The Centre on Thursday removed a Rs 10,000 cap imposed in 2017 on the education concessions given to children of soldiers killed or left disabled in the line of duty.
Until July, the government fully reimbursed tuition and hostel fees, cost of books, uniforms for the children of soldiers killed in action, or those missing or left disabled. However, following the recommendations of the Seventh Pay Commission, the amount was limited to Rs 10,000.
The move affected thousands of children of armed forces personnel, and led to protests from the community. Several top-ranking officers, including Indian Navy Chief Sunil Lanba, had written to the government to do away with the limit.
Lanba had said the education grant was a “small gesture that would assure the families of our brave women and men that the nation cares for them”.
