At least 32 people were killed and 52 injured on Wednesday when a suicide bomber blew himself up near a Shia shrine in Kabul, TOLOnews reported. The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attack, though there is no official comment on the claim yet.
The blast took place around midday near the Ali Abad Hospital and Kabul University, according to TOLONews. The Interior Affairs Ministry said the bomber was walking among a group of people when he detonated his explosive-laden vest.
Tuesday marked the Nowruz festival, the start of the Persian new year. Kabul’s acting police chief, Dawood Amin, said a Nowruz event was being held in the area before the bombing. The bomber detonated his explosives when people were leaving the Kart-e-Sakhi shrine.
Several people have died in blasts in Afghanistan in the past few months. At least three civilians were killed and two wounded in a car bomb explosion in Kabul on March 17. Three days before that, 10 security personnel were killed in an insurgent attack at a checkpoint in Farah province.
At least five Afghan National Army soldiers were killed and 10 wounded in an attack at a military academy in Kabul on January 29.
