Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of insulting the common man by claiming credit for India’s progress, PTI reported. Gandhi made the remarks during an election campaign rally in Karnataka.

“Wherever Narendra Modi goes, he says that in the last 70 years nothing has happened,” Gandhi said in Padubidri in Udupi district. “He is insulting your parents, poor farmers, labourers and the small businessmen of India. If this country stands as equal to other countries of the world today, it has not happened in two years. It has taken years of time and the sweat and blood of common people.”

Gandhi, who later attended a roadshow in Mangaluru with Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, said the Bharatiya Janata Party divides people despite praising social reformers such as Basavanna and Narayana Guru. He also compared the BJP to the Kauravas and said the party was capable of doing anything for power.

“Thousands of years ago, the Kauravas were fighting for power and the Pandavas were fighting for the truth,” the Congress president said. “The same question arises now – whether to support the BJP’s hunger for power or the Congress’ fight for the truth.”

Gandhi also criticised the Modi government’s track record on the economy. He claimed even Union ministers agree that unemployment has skyrocketed in India in the last few years.

“During demonetisation, Prime Minister Modi helped his industrialist friends turn their black money into white, while the common people had to stand in queues to exchange their hard-earned money,” the Congress leader alleged.

Gandhi also accused the Centre of bungling the Rafale fighter jet deal with France and taking it away from a public sector enterprise in Bengaluru. “This stole jobs from Bengaluru youth,” he said. “This is called corruption.”
