In the recent past, the world has some lost some very popular musicians, among them being David Bowie, Prince, Chris Cornell, Fats Domino. Now, joining them in musical heaven is the internet’s own feline celebrity, Bento, popularly known as Keyboard Cat.

Keyboard Cat became one of the internet’s earliest memes, having been made famous nearly a decade ago with a YouTube video of some masterful work on the keyboard. Keyboard Cat was a culture icon, known for his endearing videos and groovy moves with the keyboard. Sadly, he died on March 8, at the age of nine.

Charlie Schmidt, his owner and the person responsible for the videos, paid a moving tribute to Keyboard Cat with a video (above).

It should be known, though, that the cat from the first keyboard cat video (below) was not Bento, but Fatso, a cat Schmidt previously owned. Fatso found fame in 2007 after Schmidt uploaded VHS tapes shot in 1984 on YouTube.

Bento, however, proved a worthy successor to Fatso after he was adopted from a shelter. Here is his first video.

Fittingly, the internet has been mourning the loss of Keyboard Cat with an outpouring of grief and gratitude:
