The Delhi Police arrested three men and detained a juvenile for allegedly beating to death a 60-year-old man in the city’s North West region of Wazirpur on Saturday.

The police said the incident occurred around 3.30 pm when a water tanker reached the victim’s colony. A fight broke out between the victim Lal Bahadur’s son Rohit and a neighbour over the distribution of water.

“Lal Bahadur, who was trying to stop the fight between the neighbours and his family, was beaten up,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (North West) Aslam Khan said, according to The Indian Express. “They landed several blows on him before he collapsed.”

In his statement to the police, Rohit said he kept begging the accused to stop beating up his father but they did not listen. Instead, they beat him up as well with iron rods and sticks, he said. “This wasn’t the first time such a fight took place in the colony,” he told The Times of India. “The lack of a pipeline forced us to pool money and call for a tanker. But it becomes a daily fight with others in the locality to fill water.”

He claimed that a few days ago, his mother was also beaten up by some women for protesting against crowding near the tanker.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (North West) Aslam Khan identified the arrested people as Sunil alias Waqil alias Guturu, Akash alias Sonu and Arvind Singh, according to The Hindu. The minor will be produced before a juvenile court, and then probably sent to a correctional home, the police said.
