Unidentified individuals beheaded a Bharatiya Janata Party worker’s father in Bihar’s Darbhanga city on Thursday night, PTI reported on Friday. The assailants also injured the worker, Kamlesh Yadav who claimed his father was killed because he named a square after Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Kamlesh Yadav, recuperating at a hospital, blamed Rashriya Janata Dal workers for his father Ramchandra Yadav’s murder. “On Thursday, local Rashtriya Janata Dal supporters, who had been opposed to naming of the square after Modi, tried to remove the plaque bearing the name,” he said. “When we protested, they said that the Rashtriya Janata Dal’s victory in bye-polls marked their party’s resurgence and so they wanted to rename the square after Lalu Prasad.”
He said that the Rashtriya Janata Dal workers left after he and his father opposed them, but then 20 to 25 of them arrived at their house on motorcycles and beheaded his father with a sword.
However, the police claimed the murder was the result of personal enmity. “According to our information, the attackers had some personal enmity with Kamlesh Yadav and his family,” said Dharbanga Additional Superintendent of Police Dilnawaz Ahmad. “We are not aware of any dispute over the naming of the square. All angles will be investigated.”
Local BJP workers demonstrated against the beheading, blocking road traffic for close to an hour. The protests ended after the police assured the cadre of adequate action against the guilty.
