Piplantri village in Rajasthan has devised an innovative method to combine two major causes – girl-child empowerment and afforestation – into a single initiative.
ANI reports that the village has made it mandatory for families to plant up to 111 saplings every time a daughter is born in their homes. The village is practising its own brand of eco-feminism, and it is certainly an alternative approach to combating two problems together.
However, planting the trees isn’t enough, as they also need to be cared for. A young girl in the video promises to do just that. Let’s hope the habit catches on.
