An Australian man who has lived in India for the last 40 years without travel documents was recently convicted of sexually assaulting children in Visakhapatnam district of Andhra Pradesh and several places in neighbouring Odisha, The Hindu reported on Wednesday.
The man, Paul Henry Dean, 72, used to pose as a priest and a doctor.
A railway court in Visakhapatnam sentenced Dean to three years in jail on charges under sections of the Indian Penal Code relating to unnatural sex, said the report. He also received a one-year sentence for obscenity, and a two-year sentence under the Passport Act and Foreigners Act. The court also fined him Rs 32,000.
All the sentences will run concurrently, according to The Hindu.
The 72-year-old used to pose as a priest in several missions, where he sexually abused a number of orphans. The Visakhapatnam Police had arrested him on similar charges in 2001, but he was released on bail. He then moved to Odisha’s Muniguda where he committed similar offences, The Hindu reported.
According to a report published in ABC in May 2009, Dean had disappeared from Bunbury, Australia, in 1976. While he was believed to be in Indonesia, he was actually in south India, the report had said.
