A statue of Jana Sangh leader Syama Prasad Mookerjee was found damaged in Assam’s Kokrajhar on Wednesday. The Bharatiya Janata Party, which traces its roots to the Jana Sangh, condemned the act, and demanded action in the matter.
The police are investigating the incident. “If no organisation files a case on the matter, we will take a suo moto case [take cognisance on its own],” Time8 quoted Superintendent of Police Rajen Singh as saying.
The incident follows a similar act of vandalism in Kolkata where a bust of the Jana Sangh leader was damaged on March 7, for which seven people were arrested.
Several statues have been vandalised across the country since March 5 when suspected BJP workers brought down a statue of the communist leader Lenin in Tripura’s Belonia town. Another suspected BJP worker defaced a statue of social reformer Periyar in Tamil Nadu’s Vellore town on March 6. A statue of BR Ambedkar was also vandalised in Meerut’s Mawana Khurd.
