Volunteers in Maharashtra’s Yavatmal city found thousands of Aadhaar cards, purportedly original, while cleaning wells on Sunday, The Times of India reported.
The cards were packed in nylon bags, which were weighed down with rocks. While some of them were partially damaged, the details on many other cards were legible. Most of the cards belonged to residents of Lohara village on the outskirts of Yavatmal, the report said.
District Collector Rajesh Deshmukh has ordered an investigation by Tehsildar Sachin Shejal. “We will not spare anyone found guilty of dereliction of duties,” Deshmukh said. Shejal has been told to find out if the cards were in the custody of the Revenue Department or the Indian Postal Services.
Yavatmal Chief Post Master Anand Sarkar also said that he has sought a report into the incident, and will take action based on its findings.
