Jeff Bezos, the CEO of Amazon, has been working with the Long Now Foundation to set up a clock called The 10,000 Year Clock, for which the process of installation has begun.
The clock is being put inside a hollowed out mountain in West Texas, USA and, as the name suggests, is meant to last ten thousand years. That rules out electronics.
This entirely mechanical device is 500 feet tall and is powered by the changes in ambient temperature between day and night, which are known as diurnal thermal cycles. Naturally, given its dimensions, the clockwork elements are massive.
Bezos calls it “a symbol for long-term thinking”. He credits the idea to Danny Hillis and Zander Rose, who originally proposed such a clock back in 1995. The video above, posted by Bezos- is a time lapse video of the installation of this giant clock.
