The Irrfan and Saba Qamar-starrer Hindi Medium will be released in China on April 4, during the Qing Ming Holiday weekend.
Directed by Saket Chaudhary, the 2017 comedy looks at the extreme measures taken by a lengths to which a middle-class couple go to get their daughter enrolled in a posh elite English-medium school in Delhi. Homi Adjania, of Being Cyrus and Finding Fanny fame, has been roped in to direct the sequel.
The release of Hindi Medium in China follows the blockbuster success of recent Hindi films that have made it to Chinese cinemas. Rajkumar Hirani’s 3 Idiots (2009), a critique of the Indian higher education system, grossed $2.2 million (Rs 14.3 crores) in China. Two other Aamir Khan starrers, Dangal (2016) and Secret Superstar (2017), both based on women’s empowerment, grossed $193 million (Rs 1,255 crores) and $118 million (Rs 767.77 crores) respectively.
Meanwhile, the Salman Khan starrer Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015), which was released in China on March 2, has earned over $14.02 million (Rs 91.07 crores) and looks all set to cross the Rs 100-crore mark.
