The last year has been a huge step forward for women’s sport in India. With some records, several big titles, and many firsts, it has been game-changing for women athletes to say the least.
From India’s first-ever fencing gold medal and first gymnastics World Cup medal to two medals at the Badminton World Championship, from qualifying for the Hockey World Cup after eight years to coming as close as nine runs to winning the Cricket World Cup.
India’s women athletes are ensuring a change in perception as their achievements on the field bring them into the limelight off it.
Despite the highs, there are many challenges that still remain for women across Indian sport.
But, International Women’s Day is a good time to celebrate the achievements of these path-breaking ladies in the last 12 months. We hope more glass ceilings are broken and higher peaks are reached in the coming years.
