At least 30 people have been killed and as many injured after a truck fell off a bridge in Gujarat’s Bhavnagar district on Tuesday morning, PTI reported. A marriage party was travelling in the truck.
The incident took place on the Rajkot-Bhavnagar state highway between 7.30 am and 7.45 am, when the truck’s driver was trying to overtaking a vehicle, police said. Reports earlier in the day had also said that police believed the truck’s driver lost control as he was drowsy. Sixty people were in the truck.
Among the injured, eight are said to be in a critical condition, Minister of State for Home Pradipsinh Jadeja said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the accident “extremely unfortunate and anguishing”.
Chief Minister Vijay Rupani announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh for the next of kin of those who died in the accident, ANI reported. He also promised a thorough investigation.
