After walking to school for over an hour in freezing temperatures, eight-year-old Wang Fuman showed up in class with frozen hair and frozen eyebrows. This photograph, widely shared on social media, touched the hearts of many of his countrymen in China.
Fuman and his family live in Western China, and he has been labelled one of China’s “left behind children” by Chinese media. The video above, posted by South China Morning Post, takes a look into his poverty-stricken life. The video also takes viewers on that infamous trek from his home to school that gave rise to his sudden social media fame.
His newfound fame brought in donations for other families in his village. While he received 8,000 yuan, on top of new clothes and books, SCMP reported that each child attending the village school was given 500 yuan.
