Two armed men kidnapped a Class 1 student from Delhi’s Dilshad Garden locality on Thursday, The Times of India reported. The incident took place around 8 am.
The bike-borne men stopped the school van in which the boy was travelling, shot at the driver, grabbed the boy in front of his sister and rode towards the Uttar Pradesh border, The Indian Express quoted a police officer as saying.
There were 25 children in the vehicle, according to NDTV.
While the police have not ruled out the possibility of professional criminals in the kidnapping, they suspect that a relative or acquaintance of the child may have committed the crime, The Times of India quoted an unidentified police officer as saying.
Joint Commissioner of Police (Eastern Range) Ravindra Singh Yadav confirmed the incident. The parents have no received a ransom call yet, according to The Indian Express.
The bikers got away with the kidnapping even though New Delhi is on high alert and security has been tightened across the city for Republic Day, the ASEAN Summit and the release of the film Padmaavat.
