After the stupendous success of Dangal, Aamir Khan Productions’s Secret Superstar looks set become a hit in China.
The Zaira Wasim starrer, which features Khan in a supporting role, had earned up to Rs 21 crore (RMB23.3 million) by 3 pm on Friday, its opening day in China, putting it atop the charts with a 25% market share, according to a report in Variety. The second greatest market share belonged to Zhang Ziyi-starring Forever Young, which claimed 16% of the earnings. Forever Young grossed $23 million during its opening weekend, and reports indicate that Secret Superstar may surpass that figure over the next couple of days.
Secret Superstar narrates the story of a 14-year old girl (Wasim) from a conservative Muslim family who has to fight adversity and her orthodox, violent father to fulfill her dreams of becoming a singer. Khan plays Shakti Kumar, a talented and flamboyant musician. The movie was released in India on October 19 last year.
Khan’s previous film Dangal, which also co-starred Wasim, earned an unprecedented $193 million in China. The actor, who became hugely popular in the country after his 2009 movie 3 Idiots resonated with viewers there, is now embarking on a week-long tour in the country. He reportedly scheduled to visit Beijing from January 23 to January 26.
In the wake of the success of Dangal in China, Salman Khan-starrer Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015) is also being released in the country on March 2.
