A short trailer of the second season of the acclaimed television series The Handmaid’s Tale is out, and it teases the fate of Moira, who escaped into Canada, and Offred, who became pregnant at the end of the first season.
“So much of this season is about motherhood,” Elisabeth Moss, who plays Offred, told Variety. “We’ve talked a lot about the impending birth of the child that’s growing inside of her as a bit of a ticking time bomb. The complications are really wonderful to explore. She does have the baby, but it gets taken away from her. She can’t be its mother. It makes for good drama.”
The Hulu-produced series will go on air on April 25. The new season will be even darker than the first, Moss promised.
The award-winning show is based on Margaret Atwood’s dystopian novel of the same name, and is set in the Republic of Gilead, where women have been stripped of their rights and have been reduced to wombs for rent. Marisa Tomei will join the cast of the new season, which will also reveal more about the colonies where Gilead’s prisoners are lodged.
