Articles about film and television made up a majority of the Wikipedia’s most-viewed pages of 2017, according to a study by the Wikimedia Foundation that compiled last year’s top 25 articles on the open-sourced encyclopedia.
The Indian film industry was particularly popular among readers of the open-sourced encyclopedia and Baahubali 2: The Conclusion was the most viewed movie page last year, racking up more than 14 million views. Directed by SS Rajamouli, Baahubali 2 is the highest-grossing film in Indian history. Pages listing Bollywood films released in 2017 and highest-grossing Indian films were also among the 25 most-read articles on the website.
The most read article overall, with 37 million page views, was “Deaths in 2017”, followed by a page on American President Donald Trump.
Among the films that made it to the Top 25 were the 2017 releases It, Logan, Wonder Woman, Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Justice League.
Pages about television series were also popular. Topping the list in this category was Game of Thrones, followed by 13 Reasons Why, Riverdale and Stranger Things.
Pages about the British monarchy, including Queen Elizabeth and Suits actress Meghan Markle, who is engaged to Prince Harry, also featured prominently on the list. As the study pointed out, this was in part fuelled by the popularity of television shows on the royal family, such as The Crown and Victoria.
