Eight people were killed after a boat carrying 48 passengers, including five children, capsized off Indonesia’s Kalimantan island on Monday, Reuters reported. The country’s national rescue agency said that 13 passengers were still missing while the rest had been rescued.
The boat departed from the district of Tanjung Selor in North Kalimantan province at 8.15 am (6.45 am IST) and was on its way to the island of Tarakan when it hit a piece of wood floating in the sea and sank, Xinhua reported.
Boats are a relatively cheap form of transportation and accidents are common since safety regulations are not strictly enforced. Ten people were killed in July 2017 when a speed boat capsized off Indonesia’s Borneo island, AP reported.
