Five soldiers of the Central Reserve Police Force were killed after militants attacked a training centre in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama district early on Sunday, ANI reported. Two of the militants were also killed, while at least two soldiers were injured.

The attackers are suspected to be from the Jaish-e-Mohammad group, according to Hindustan Times. Other reports identified them as Fardeen Ahmad Khanday of Tral and Manzoor Ahmed Baba of Drubgam in Pulwama.

“The militants are holed up in a building block in the camp, and an operation is under way to neutralise them,” an unidentified CRPF official told PTI.

Two of the soldiers injured were identified as Narender and Samadhan Malve, according to ANI. The Central Reserve Police Force’s Sharief-ud-din Ganaie, Kuldip Roy, Taufail Ahmed, Rajendra Nain and Pradeep Kumar Panda lost their lives.

The militants threw grenades at the centre, where troops were trained for counter-militancy operations in Jammu and Kashmir, and opened fire before entering the camp of the 185 Battalion in Lethapora around 2.10 am, NDTV reported.

The attack comes days after Indian troops killed top Jaish-e-Mohammad commander Noor Mohammad Tantray in Awantipora’s Samboora area.

Eight security personnel were killed and several others were injured in a militant attack in Pulwama district in August. The attack took place at the District Police Lines, where both CRPF personnel and officers of the Jammu and Kashmir Police were stationed. In November, six CRPF jawans were injured after suspected militants attacked their vehicle in Anantnag district.

Soldier killed in Nowsehra

Meanwhile, a soldier died after Pakistan allegedly violated the ceasefire along the Line of Control on Sunday in the Nowsehra sector in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district. Pakistani troops began to fire around 3.50 am, The Indian Express reported.

The latest ceasefire violation comes a day after after Indian Army chief General Bipin Rawat visited forward posts in Rajouri.
