Hyukoh

This song by the South Korean indie band Hyukoh is everything a song for the New Year should not be – it isn’t upbeat, it’s even a tad gloomy. Yet, that’s what makes this little soft rock gem from the band’s full-length album, 23, shine bright. It has a wonderful message of growing up and learning from one’s mistakes, disappointments and insecurities. The band’s frontman, Oh Hyuk, has said that he wanted to convey an unresolved feeling, that the lessons we learn in life are not meant to be learnt beforehand.

Other than the message, what hooked me were its simple lyrics and soulful vocals. The Beatles-influence is hard to miss in the melody, but in a good way. For those who don’t like to party on New Year’s Eve, here’s my stay-at-home-and-sing-along pick.
