Around 4,000 people participated in a pro-government rally in Iran’s Tehran on Saturday after protests against the administration broke out across the nation’s cities on Friday, AP reported. The anti-government demonstrators were protesting against corruption and rising prices.
Several protestors have been arrested, the news agency quoted unidentified officials as saying.
United States President Donald Trump took to Twitter to express his solidarity with the anti-government protestors. “Many reports of peaceful protests by Iranian citizens fed up with regime’s corruption and its squandering of the nation’s wealth to fund terrorism abroad,” Trump tweeted. “The Iranian government should respect their people’s rights, including the right to express themselves. The world is watching!”
The US State department condemned the arrests. The United States urged “all nations to publicly support the Iranian people and their demands for basic rights and an end to corruption,” Spokeswoman Heather Nauert said.
