The United Liberation Front of Assam (Independent) on Monday released Arunabh Phukan, the son of Bharatiya Janata Party leader Dilip Phukan, 10 days after he was abducted, IANS reported.
Arunabh Phukan was released inside a jungle in Changlang district of Arunachal Pradesh in the afternoon, after which he had to walk several kilometres to reach a border village, according to The Telegraph. The 24-year-old then informed his mother and wife about his release.
Arunabh Phukan was abducted from Jairampur along the Arunachal Pradesh-Assam border on December 15 after the Ulfa (I) suspected him of working as a spy for the security forces. It was said that he was taken to Myanmar after the abduction.
The group had also reportedly demanded Rs 2 crore ransom. However, Dilip Phukan and Ulfa (I)’s commander-in-chief Paresh Baruah on Monday denied it. “After questioning, we found that he is innocent and we released him,” Baruah told IANS. “He is ‘my dear’ boy and there is no question of taking any ransom for his release.”
After his release, Arunabh Phukan said he was kept well and not tortured by the group.
