Hours after the Pakistan military’s media wing, Inter-Services Public Relations, claimed Indian forces killed their soldiers on Monday evening, senior Indian Army officials reportedly said they had crossed the border.

Five commandos of the Indian Army crossed the Line of Control in Poonch on Monday evening and killed four Pakistani soldiers, NDTV reported, quoting unidentified officials. The attack was targeted at a group of Pakistani soldiers patrolling a temporary post near the Rukh Chakri sector in Rawalakot. It was a “localised tactical level operation” that was authorised at the brigadier level, the report said.

The strike was carried out a day after four Indian Army troops were killed after the Pakistani Army violated the ceasefire in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district. Soon after the attack on Sunday, the Indian Army had said “it shall retaliate at a time and choice of its choosing”, The Indian Express reported.

Officials told NDTV that the idea was to make it clear to Pakistan that if their soldiers attacked India, there will be a response.

On Tuesday, Jammu and Kashmir’s Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh said Pakistan was given a “fitting reply”, ANI reported. “Whenever they dare to do such acts, they are forced to face its consequences,” Singh told ANI. “They took the life of four of our soldiers and in response, we took our revenge and will continue taking strong revenge in coming times.”

On Sunday, the Pakistani forces had resorted to heavy firing from across the border along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district, the Indian Army had said.
