The Delhi Police on Sunday said they had arrested a woman for trafficking and forcing minor girls into prostitution in the Capital, as well as in Uttar Pradesh and Haryana. Geeta Arora, alias Sonu Punjaban, was taken into custody on Saturday after a team of the Delhi Crime Branch interrogated her, IANS reported, quoting an unidentified senior police officer.
A teenager, who Punjaban had forced into the sex trade in 2009, helped the police with the investigation. She escaped in 2014 and informed officers at the Najafgarh Police Station about Punjaban and her aides, according to India Today. Assistant Commissioner of Police Sandeep Lamba led the investigation.
The woman is involved in five older cases, including ones registered under the Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences Act and the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act, as well as for murder and other crimes in Delhi and Haryana, the senior police officer said.
Investigators also found that Punjaban was in contact with several traffickers in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Delhi. They allegedly brought girls from different places to her to be sold for prostitution, The Times of India.
