Two girls in a village Uttar Pradesh’s Mainpuri were buried alive on Sunday morning after they fell into an open pit while playing, The Indian Express reported. A third was injured and is still in the hospital.
Three people, including the village chief who had dug the 10-foot deep pit, have been booked. No arrests have been made so far, the police said.
The girls, Gunjan, 12, Shivani, 14, and Anita, 13, were playing near the road in Nagla Banshi village when they fell into the pit, SR Gautam, the station officer at the Aunchha police station told The Indian Express. “Before people nearby could react, the soil in the pit caved in. Gunjan and Shivani died,” Gautam said.
Anita was taken to a hospital in Saifai, the police said. According to the girls’ family, the village chief Shyam Babu and some local residents had allegedly dug the pit. Shyam Babu allegedly used the soil from the pit for a school he owns.
