A vehicle in Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit’s convoy killed two people in the Kancheepuram district on Friday, the Hindustan Times reported. Two others were injured in the accident, the police said.
The police said a 12-year boy and a 35-year-old man were killed. One of the injured is an elderly woman. The accident took place when Purohit was on his way back to Chennai from Cuddalore. The report said the driver lost control of the vehicle and hit the pedestrians.
Controversy over Cuddalore visit
On Friday, Tamil Nadu Opposition parties led by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam protested against Purohit’s review meetings with officials after talking to residents of Cuddalore, calling it an interference in the state’s rights, PTI reported.
DMK Working President MK Stalin said the governor must stop “political work” of reviewing projects while Tamil Nadu Congress Committee chief Su Thirunavukkarasar alleged the governor was “acting as if this is [a] President’s rule”, PTI reported.
A Tamil news channel also claimed that a woman alleged Purohit had invaded her privacy while inspecting toilets built under Swachch Bharat Abhiyan campaign.
By Friday evening, Purohit’s office refuted the claims and called the TV channel’s report “malicious and scurrilous”. The clarification said the governor inspected the toilet only after a local woman official made sure it was not occupied.
