Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday commissioned the INS Kalvari submarine into the Indian Navy, and dedicated it to the nation at an event in Mumbai, ANI reported. INS Kalvari is the first of six Scorpene-class submarines that will be inducted into the Navy.
In March, the Indian Navy had successfully fired the first anti-ship missile from the Kalvari submarine, The Indian Express reported. Shipbuilder Mazgaon Dock Limited formally handed over the submarine to the Navy in September after a delay of four years. After four months of sea trials, the submarine was commissioned on Thursday in Mumbai.
INS Kalvari was to be inducted into the Navy in 2016, but in August, a major security breach was revealed. Data running into more than 22,000 pages detailing the secret combat capabilities of Scorpene-class submarines was leaked.
