A major earthquake, measuring 6.2 on the Richter Scale, struck the southeastern Iranian province of Kerman on Tuesday, AFP reported. This was the second earthquake in Iran in under 48 hours.
There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties from the quake, which hit at a depth of 10 km near the town of Hojedk, according to the United States Geological Survey.
On Monday, Iranian state media reported an earthquake of magnitude 6.0 in its western region near the border with Iraq, Independent reported. The tremors were felt in Kermanshah province, where a powerful 7.3-magnitude earthquake killed nearly 600 people and injured some 8,000 in November.
In 2003, at least 15,000 people died in a devastating earthquake near the city of Bam.
