Post-match: Sri Lanka made the most of winning a good toss, wrecking India’s batting with some excellent swing bowling. But when Rohit Sharma and Co look back in this match, they’ll know the conditions were not as bad as going down 29 for 7. Irresponsible batting by everyone except MS Dhoni and Kuldeep. But take nothing away from Lakmal who has been fantastic on this tour of India. 14-4 from 10 overs.

Rohit Sharma: ‘The batting let us down, 112 is not enough, we did not do well get out of a tough situation. Not surprised by Dhoni doing well.’

Thisara Perera: ‘200% credit to our bowlers, didn’t expect such an unplayable wicket coming into this match.’

Man of the match: No doubts, Lakmal. For his 14/4 in 10 overs.

As we wrap up this cricket live blog, head over to the hockey live blog where India stand to win a bronze medal against a depleted Germany side.

It’s all over, Sri Lanka win by 7 wickets: 29.2 overs to spare. Tells you all need to know. Sri Lanka barely made to sweat (yes, yes we know the match is being played in a hill station) on their way to a rare ODI win in 2017. Mathews started with the first Indian wicket, and finishes with a glorious off drive for four.

After 19 overs, 100/3: 19th over brings up the 100, Dickwella’s turn to get the customary boundary of the over...

After 17 overs, Sri Lanka 91/3: Matter of time now. Two boundaries off Bumrah’s over, one off Pandya’s. Bumrah trying to bounce Mathews out for some reason, but doesn’t succeed. A controlled pull shot for four, followed by an elegant cover drive.

After 15 overs, Sri Lanka 76/3: Pandya concedes a boundary to Tharanga but comes back with a wicket soon after – Tharanga’s breezy innings comes to an end of 49. Dhawan just about hangs to the catch. Dickwella is the next batsman, and announces his intentions with a lofted shot over midwicket for four off Bhuvi’s next over. A scorching straight drive off Pandya by Mathews, before players break for drinks. Ending in a jiffy.

Some reactions to that Dhoni image, meanwhile...

After 12 overs, Sri Lanka 60/2: Ending in a hurry... 14 runs from Pandya’s first over. Two boundaries through the offside and a horrendous ball outside leg for five wides. Dhoni’s reaction to it says it all. Four runs from the next over by Bhuvi. Tharanga races to 45 off 43 balls.

After 10 overs, Sri Lanka 42/2: This match has slipped away from India very quickly. 11 runs from the last over of the poweplay. Another no ball from Bumrah in that over, and that was because he kicked the stumps. Four off the free hit. Another four in the last ball. Tharanga is enjoying his second innings.

After 9 overs, Sri Lanka 31/2: A one-run over by Bumrah followed by a 11-run over from Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Very unlike Bhuvi once again, bowls two boundary balls in the over to Tharanga – Bumrah’s error already looks very costly. Finishes the over with a ball that cuts Mathews in half.

After 7 overs, Sri Lanka 19/2: And Bhuvneswar’s turn to strike! A good length ball, pitches outside stump, and moves back a little – getting the inside edge and on to the stumps. Thirimanne walks back, after another close (CLOSE) call for no-ball. The camera angles were not decisive enough for the 3rd umpire to give a no-ball. Lucky break for India.

After 6 overs, SL 19/1: OUT... or not. Not what India wanted at all. Should have been the second wicket but not for the first time in his career, Bumrah oversteps and misses out on a wicket. Quite comfortably overstepped as well – it was a great delivery, squaring up Tharanga who edged it to gully.

After 5 overs, SL 12/1: This is quite unlike Bhuvi with the new ball. Five good balls in the over, but one ball he offers width and Tharanga drives it handsomely for four.

After 4 overs, SL 7/1 - Bumrah strikes early: India, if there is any chance for them here, desperately need early wickets and Bumrah has provided them one. Strange shot by Gunathilaka, who was getting frustrated by dot balls, plays an ugly heave against the angle, gets an edge to Dhoni.

After 3 overs, SL 7/0: One bad ball by Bhuvi in that over – short and wide – square driven for four by Tharanga. But good pressure otherwise, consistently beating the batsman’s outside edge.

After 2 overs, Sri Lanka 3/0: Bumrah from the other end and he gets more movement than Bhuvi did in the first over. More playing and missing, a LBW appeal and a leading edge off Tharanga that doesn’t go fielder.

After 1 over, Sri Lanka 2/0: As expected, Bhuvneshwar starts off proceedings India. It’s a steady first over, no exaggerated movement. Going with the angle to the two left handed openers.

3:25 pm: Alright then, Rohit Sharma gets his team in a huddle.

Lunch: Has Dhoni given India a sniff? Join us soon for the second innings.

India all out for 112, Dhoni the last man to fall: End of a truly fabulous effort by the former captain. Came in at a point when it looked like India were going to crash to their lowest score in ODIs, but along with Kuldeep, did some repair job before accelerating towards the end.

After 37 overs, INDIA 108/9 - FIFTY FOR MS DHONI! What a player , what an innings. Starts the over off Pradeep with a truly incredible shot – just good length, he goes back on to his back foot and lofts it over mid off for a six. Then a strong punch through cover, to bring up his 67th ODI fifty. The next over, Pathirana concedes 10 as Dhoni goes big once again – a massive 89-meter six followed by a straight drive for four off the last ball.

After 35 overs, India 87/9: What have you done Bumrah? After defending well for 14 balls, he goes for an ugly heave against debutant Pathirana and is bowled. Dhoni, surprisingly, trusted Bumrah during that phase of five overs where just 7 runs came. He had also just survived a LBW decision. Dhoni Review System came to Bumrah’s rescue. Given out LBW, MSD reviews immediately, and impact was outside off stump.

After 30 overs, India 80 for 8: Dhoni farms the strike with Bumrah at the other end, gets the odd boundary with a flick through square leg off Akila. Bumrah then plays out a maiden off Akila to mark the end of 30 overs – a point where conventional wisdom suggests the score should be doubled. If India get anywhere close to that from here, it would be pretty amazing.

Meanwhile...

After 27 overs, India 75 for 8: Looks like Dhoni will throw his bat around for a bit now, with Bumrah and and Chahal left to bat. Gets lucky with an inside edge to fine leg for four. Drinks break in Dharamsala and looks like India are going to have something to fight with.

After 26 overs, India 70/8: Spin strikes and Kuldeep falls! After a phase where the medium pacers went for runs, Akila Dhananjaya strikes in the very first over. From around the wicket, he draws Kuldeep forward and Dickwella competes a lightning quick stumping.

After 24 overs, India 60 for 7: A 10-run over in Dharamsala and even captain Rohit has a hint of a smile on his face! First Dhoni’s pull through fine leg takes India past their lowest ODI score (54) and Kuldeep finishes the over with a cracking drive through point. Good fightback this by India.

After 22 overs, India 44 for 7: A six-run over, followed by a nine-run over. What is going on in Dharamsala? And rejoice, India fans! This won’t be the lowest score in ODI history as India go past 35, reach 40 even. Two boundaries for Kuldeep in that over, one a classy flick through midwicket and the next a streaky edge to third man.

After 21 overs, India 35/7: One run away from going past the lowest score in ODI history, thanks to a six-run over (SIX RUNS IN AN OVER!) from captain Perera. Dhoni comes down the track and punishes the short ball by punching through mid-off.

After 19 overs, Sri Lanka 29/7: 10 overs on the trot for Lakmal, and he almost finishes with a five-for. A full, swinging ball at the pads, the umpire says not out as it was missing leg, most likely. The previous ball, Dhoni denied Kuldeep a single – the former captain seems to be farming strike already.

After 17 overs, India 29/7: Suranga Lakmal, you beauty! Bhuvneshwar Kumar is gone! Boy, oh boy, this is getting ugly for India. This is delivered from slightly wide off the crease, Bhuvi plays way inside the line of the ball and edges it to Dickwella.

The lowest ever score for India on the cards!

After 16 overs, India 28/6: And no, Pandya can’t pull off a ‘Kapil Dev’! And once again, this is a nothing shot. After getting a couple of boundaries, it seemed like Pandya was trying to attack his way out of this, goes down the track and for some reason decides to leave the ball at the last minute – edged to first slip.

After 14 overs, India 20/5: Shreyas Iyer is gone now! Ultimately, Iyer’s debut (a very dodgy innings) ends with a poor shot. Nuwan Pradeep just keeps it outside offstump, the bat comes down at an angle, and chopped on to the stumps. Can Pandya and Dhoni revive this team?

This is the worst start for India in ODIs – losing their 5th wicket on 16.

After 13 overs, India 16/4: Pandey is walking back now! Horror start for India continues. Lakmal’s 3rd wicket in his 6th over. Just... wow. This one moves ever so slightly from a good length on middle stump, Pandey flicks with his bat face closed – leading edge to slip.

Out walks MS Dhoni.

End of powerplay, India 11/3 after 10 overs: Shreyas Iyer and Manish Pandey see off the powerplay without further damage but boy, is this an incredible scoreline or what? 11 runs in the powerplay. ELEVEN.

After 9 overs, India 10/3: Well, well, well. Dinesh Karthik is gone! Gone for a 18-ball duck! LBW off Lakmal. Moves back in slightly and is given out. Takes too long to review, umpire says time up. DRS wouldn’t have saved him anyway.

After 8 overs, India 7/2: There is no release of pressure on India here. There is movement yes, but there is no carry – the balls are constantly dying in front of the keeper. Shreyas Iyer gets off the mark in ODIs after 10 dot balls, flicks through midwicket for 4. Massive appeal from Sri Lanka for a LBW against Karthik in the 8th over. but the umpire says no yet again! SL don’t review – and it’s a good call. Missing leg stump. Looked close.

After 5 overs, India 2/2: Rohit Sharma is gone! What a start this is for Sri Lanka. And once again, it’s DRS that comes to their rescue. Lakmal keeps it in the channel outside off, and there was a clear sound on the stump mic that was heard on the television, but the umpire missed. They go upstairs and it’s a fantastic review. India in deep trouble on a moving track.

After 4 overs, India 2/1: Steady start this by Sri Lanka. Excellent lines and lengths, Shreyas is a bit jumpy against that moving ball. Rohit finally gets India off the mark in the 3rd over. Mathews bowls another maiden from the other end.

After 2 overs, India 0/1: Angelo Mathews strikes! He didn’t bowl a single ball in the Test series, but he strikes in his first over of the ODI series. It pitches on the off stump, moves back in to the left hander and hits him on the pads. The umpire says not out, Captain Perera and Mathews decide they need to review it and what a call that is! Three reds on the tracker and Dhawan is gone for a duck – two maidens for Sri Lanka to start with as well.

After 1 over, India 0/0: Lakmal starts with a maiden. Typically watchful start from Rohit. Lakmal gets the outside edge with an away swinger off the very first ball, but it doesn’t carry – played with soft hands by Rohit. Looks like there will be early assistance for pacers.

11:30 am: And we are all set... Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan walk out, Suranga Lakmal with the new white ball in hand.

11:25 am: One never tires of seeing the picturesque Dharamsala...

Talking points:

So Ajinkya Rahane misses out. There was a school of thought that said he should take Kohli’s place, but turns out Shreyas will do that instead. Dinesh Karthik retains his place in the middle order, but it remains to be seen who walks out at No. 4. No surprises in the bowling lineup with Chahal and Kuldeep joining Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar.
