Tamil Nadu Chief Minister E Palaniswami and his deputy O Panneerselvam led a silent march in Chennai on Tuesday as a tribute to former chief minister J Jayalalithaa on her first death anniversary, PTI reported.
Most workers of the All India Anna Dravida Munnettra Kazhagam wore black shirts. They were accompanied by thousands of admirers of Jayalalithaa. The march started at Anna Salai and headed towards Jayalalithaa’s memorial at Marina Beach, where Palaniswami placed a wreath.
Jayalalithaa, a former actor and politician, died on December 5, 2016 at the age of 68, a day after she suffered a cardiac arrest. She had been admitted to Apollo Hospital in Chennai for over two months. The Tamil Nadu government declared the next day a state holiday and educational institutions were asked to remain closed for three days as a mark of respect for the leader.
