The Bombay High Court on Monday quashed a proposal by the Reliance-led Mumbai Metro One Private Limited to increase the fares of the Mumbai Metro, PTI reported. The bench was hearing petitions against the increase by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority and Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam.
A bench of Chief Justice Manjula Chellur and Justice MS Sonak set aside a July 2015 decision of the Metro Fare Fixation Committee, which had approved the increase in fares. The committee had recommended that the fare range be increased from Rs 10-Rs 40 to Rs 10-Rs 110.
The bench instead directed that the panel be reconstituted. It said that the new panel must decide the Mumbai metro fare structure “expeditiously,” at most within three months.
