Coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, south Kerala and the Lakshadweep islands are likely to get very heavy rainfall over the next two days, as weather activity builds up over both the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea, the India Meteorological Department has forecast.
In the 24 hours ending Monday morning, heavy rain was recorded in Rameshwaram (14 cm), Meenampakkam (10 cm), Nagapattinam and Chennai (6 cm each), The Hindu reported.
Meanwhile, the regional weather department in Chennai recorded a low pressure area forming in the Bay of Bengal which it said could intensify into a cyclone by December 4, The New Indian Express reported. A low pressure area is a region where the atmospheric pressure is lower than the surrounding locations, often leading to rainy, stormy weather.
The National Centers for Environmental Prediction’s Global Forecast System, a climate predicting model, also hinted at the possibility of a powerful cyclone in the Bay approaching the Tamil Nadu coast.
