Rooney Mara stars as Mary Magdalene and Joaquin Phoenix as Jesus Christ in Lion director Garth Davis’s film of the same name. Mary Magdalene looks at the life of Christ from the perspective of Magdalene, one of his most celebrated disciples. The trailer suggests not one but two powerful performances: one by Mara and the other by Phoenix.
The film also stars Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave) as Peter and Tahar Rahim (A Prophet) as Judas. Helen Edmundson and Philippa Goslett have written the screenplay. Mary Magdalene is scheduled to be released in the United Kingdom on March 16, 2018, and on March 30 in the United States.
According to reports, Mary Magdalene was to have been distributed by The Weinstein Company. In the wake of a series of sexual assault allegations against its co-founder Harvey Weinstein, Sony Pictures was given the distribution rights for the US. Universal will handle the movie’s international distribution.
