Former Zimbabwe Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa was sworn in as the country’s president at the National Sports Stadium in Harare on Friday, BBC reported. Mnangagwa, who was predecessor Robert Mugabe’s longtime deputy, had fled the country earlier in November, claiming threats against his life.
On November 14, Zimbabwe’s military took over the headquarters of state broadcaster ZBC, and detained Mugabe and his family at their home after Mugabe fired Mnangagwa. The next day, Mugabe was deposed from his party, the ZANU-PF. On November 21, Mugabe stepped down from the presidency as impeachment proceedings against him began.
This brought Mugabe’s 37-year rule in Zimbabwe to an end. His government was accused of several human rights violations. Mugabe was also accused of maladministration, which has led to a collapse of Zimbabwe’s economy and healthcare system, among other administrative failures.
