With Angela Merkel’s future as the German Chancellor now looking uncertain, now might be a good time for her to reflect on her public persona. Seven-time Emmy Award-winning comedy actor Tracey Ullman turns the spotlight on a possible issue in this hysterical sketch video (above) from the BBC show Tracey Breaks the News.
Merkel, played by Ullman, has an unusual image problem: she does not know how to keep a poker face. “Mein Chancellorate,” implores her assistant, played by English actress Samantha Spiro. “You roll your eyes sometimes, when people test your patience,” she says as she tries to break it to her boss delicately.
After a brief denial, it finally dawns on Merkel. “And I always thought I had such a serene and beautiful poker face, damn it. Now they are going to know what I am thinking,” exclaims Ullman, in a spot-on impression of Merkel.
Her assistant attempts to train her to appear unflappable: “We will take you through some everyday situations, and all you must do is not roll the eyes, ja?” Ullman (Merkel) hilariously struggles to keep a straight face as her assistant (Spiro) puts her through the test with some uncannily precise impersonations of Theresa May and Ivanka Trump, but it is United States President Donald Trump that sends her over the edge as her “powerful eye muscles flipped her entire body.”
