The Delhi High Court on Monday asked civic bodies to consider airlifting a 108-foot statue of Hanuman in Central Delhi to remove encroachments around it, PTI reported. Entire skyscrapers have been airlifted in the United States, the bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar said.
The mindset of people in Delhi could change if civic bodies could “at even one place show that the law was being enforced”, the court said while hearing a petition seeking that unauthorised constructions in Karol Bagh, where the statue is located, be removed.
The court said that enough opportunities had been given to municipal bodies of the Capital to enforce the law, “but no one wants to do it”. The court will hear the matter next on Friday.
The large statue is often considered a landmark, and has appeared in several Bollywood films. Several buildings have been constructed illegally in its vicinity.
