While the top Indian stars failed to reach the business end of the China Superseries premier, the second rung managed to finish on the podium in Norway and Malaysia while the youngsters took centre stage at the All India Ranking meet in Chandigarh. Here is the round up.
Saili Rane wins in Norway
Saili Rane bagged her first title of the year when she defeated Estonia’s Kristin Kuuba 21-18, 21-9 in the final of the Norwegian International in Sandefjord on Sunday. This was the fourth international title for the world number 96, who dropped just one game during her quarterfinal win over Amalie Hertz in the entire tournament.
Prajakta Sawant/Yogendran Krishnan lose final in Malaysia
While Rane completed the job rather easily, her former Maharashtra teammate Prajakta Sawant and her Malaysian partner Yogendran Krishnan could not repeat the heroics of Saturday and went down 21-10, 24-22 against Japan’s Hiroki Okamura and Naru Shinoya in the Malaysia International Challenge in Johar. The top seeded mixed doubles pair saved four match points in the second game but failed to turn things around.
Immigration problems at Hong Kong
While most of the Indian contingent passed immigration easily for the Hong Kong Superseries, Commonwealth Games gold medallist Parupalli Kashyap and Singapore Superseries winner B Sai Praneeth had to spend several hours at the Hong Kong airport before they received their clearance. The last Superseries of the year begins on Tuesday and Kashyap and Sai Praneeth were going their directly from India after opting out of last week’s China Superseries Premier.
